My NDIS Journey: Liam Knight My Time at First Services

First Services is a NDIS registered business delivering excellence in disability support and training. First has 2 centres one at 27 Kelly Street, Eagleby the other one at 17 Cairns Street, Loganholme, Unit 36-38. The First centre at Eagleby provides more high needs support while the Loganholme provides of a work skill based one. There is another centre opening at Coomera early 2023. I usually go to the First Services centre at Loganholme where they provided me with a lot of support and opportunities whilst I’m on the NDIS. FIRST believes all people have the right to participate in and contribute to society.

FIRST strives to meet the needs of individuals, improve quality of life, focus on ability, promote community awareness and acceptance, empower people with disabilities, their families and indeed the whole community to address in a positive manner disability related issues.  FIRST Service provides meaningful training opportunities across a wide range of interests that are realistic, achievable and fun. We also provide meaningful community engagement opportunities. All of this is done within a friendly, inclusive and fun environment, ensuring members are comfortable and involved.

I usually go to First Tuesday and Wednesday and. On Tuesday I participate at the Loganholme centre on Cairns St, houses a large, purpose-built woodwork room including a wide variety of tools. Members learn fine motor skills and work skills, repurposing recycled timber. Items made in the woodwork room are then sold in our store to support further material purchases. I also have participated in SOAPS & CANDLES where Members learn to make soaps, candles, diffusers, bath salts & more. Members learn to use numbers, count, measure and more. We do our best to use all natural ingredients. The items our members make are sold in our shop and proceeds go to funding for providing more materials to make more products.

On Wednesday they offer SEWING & TEXTILES located at our centre in Loganholme on Cairns St, members learn to be able to follow patterns, cut fabric and sew. Fine motor skills are enhanced while members learn to hand sew and use sewing machines. They also go to Substation33 is a social enterprise initiative of YFS that has operated since 2012. It was founded by Tony Sharp to respond to the need to provide a workplace where people from long term unemployment and marginalised backgrounds could gain confidence and skills to transition to sustainable employment.

At Substation they recycle technology and electrical waste off at Substation33 where we will dismantle it and separate the components into parts that can be recycled, reused or repurposed, and diverted from landfill. That’s what they do that First on Cairns St as well.
